Latin America begins the new year under the greatest political and economic pressure in decades. In addition to recent imperialist attacks on Venezuela and constant threats from the US in the Caribbean, issues such as tariffs, security, and elections continue to be fiercely contested by political forces both within and outside the countries. Brazil, with its presidential elections scheduled for October, is already in the eye of this storm—driven primarily by the intense polarization between Lula's administration and the far-right movements aligned with Bolsonaro. To discuss these dynamics, we welcome Hugo Fanton, professor at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul and IRGAC (International Research Group on Authoritarianism and Counter-Strategies) researcher.
