For 40 years, the Stasi secured the rule of the ruling SED party. In its “fight against the enemy,” the Ministry for State Security expanded further and further, in Lichtenberg and throughout the GDR. In 1990, courageous citizens not only saved the secret police's files from destruction, they also turned Mielke's headquarters back into a public space. Today, the Stasi Records Archive is located here in the Federal Archives, among other places, and provides information about the work of the Stasi and its files.
“A monument to surveillance”: The Stasi Records Archive stores 111 kilometers of files, many of which contain personal data about individuals collected by the State Security Service. The exhibition “Einblick ins Geheime” (Insight into the Secret) makes the significance of this archive tangible.
After the tour, you will have the opportunity to visit our sample file collection. It consists of reproductions of original Stasi documents. In addition to case files and personnel files of Stasi officers, there are also files of those affected. They have consented to the publication of their documents and make it possible to “gain insight into the secret.”

Registration via einblick-ins-geheime@bundesarchiv.de or tel. 030 18 665-6699
The meeting point for the tour is in the Stasi Records Archive, Building 7, on the grounds of the former Stasi headquarters.
